Apapa is Nigeria's premier port city and the commercial gateway of the nation. Home to the Apapa Port — one of the busiest seaports in West Africa — the LGA is the heartbeat of Nigeria's import and export trade. Despite its industrial character, Apapa also houses upscale residential estates and important federal institutions.

📜 History

Apapa's development began in earnest during the colonial period when the British constructed the first deep-water wharf in 1913, transforming Lagos into a major maritime hub. The port expanded significantly after Nigerian independence and today handles billions of dollars in trade annually. Apapa was among the earliest local government areas formally established in 1976. Congestion around the port has been a long-standing infrastructure challenge that multiple administrations have worked to address.
