Lagos Island is the historic heart of Lagos — the original settlement from which the entire city grew. It hosts the Central Business District, the Balogun Market (one of the largest in West Africa), the Lagos Stock Exchange, the CBN head office and the seat of the old colonial administration. Despite being one of the smallest LGAs by area, it has the highest commercial density in Nigeria.

📜 History
Lagos Island's history spans over 400 years. According to tradition, the Awori people first settled on the island before the Bini Kingdom exerted influence and installed Oba Oduduwa's lineage as royalty around the 16th century. Portuguese traders arrived in the 15th century, giving the area its name 'Lagos' (meaning 'lakes'). The British formally colonised Lagos in 1861 making it a Crown Colony. Lagos Island served as the capital of colonial Nigeria until the capital moved to Abuja in 1991.
