📜 History
Surulere was developed as a planned residential estate in the 1950s to house the growing Lagos population. Its name in Yoruba means 'patience yields reward'. The National Stadium was built for the second All-Africa Games in 1973 and hosted several iconic events including the 1977 FESTAC. LUTH was established in 1962 as a teaching affiliate of the University of Lagos. Surulere's creative output — from literature to Afrobeats — has been immense, with Fela Anikulapo-Kuti living and performing in the area.
